Characteristics of Buddhist Jewelry

We quite often see that Buddhist design in jewelry. They are adorned and favored by the people who are interested in Buddhism or who are big on fashion jewelry. Lotuses

Lotus is widely used in jewelry designs. The roots of a lotus are in the mud, the stem grows up through the water, and the heavily scented flower lies above the water, basking in the sunlight. The lotus flower symbolizes the complete purification of the defilements of the body, speech and mind, and the full blossoming of wholesome deeds in blissful liberation. A famous scholar once said “the spirit of the best of men is spotless, like the lotus in the muddy water which does not adhere to it.” Lotus can be found all types of jewelry such as pendants and earrings.

 

The endless knots

Everything in the world is interrelated. Sending jewelry designed with knots is understood to establish auspicious connection between the giver and receiver. It also represents the union of wisdom and method.

 

Conches

Conches are also often seen on the jewelry. It is an emblem of power, authority and sovereignty whose blast is believed to banish evil spirits, averts natural disasters, and scare away poisonous creatures. Of course, today the meanings are not so various. More than often, it just represents the fashion trend.

 

Wheels

Wheel design is familiar to us. It consists of three parts: the hub, the rim, and the spokes (usually eight in number). The hub represents the axis of the world; and the rim stands for the element of limitation; and eight spokes refer to eight roads which lead to cessation of all suffering. People believe that wearing the jewelry with wheels design can decrease the sadness and bad luck to their life.

 

Figures of Buddha

Figures of Buddha can be found in many pendants, especially on jade jewelry. Mother Buddha and Tathagata are the most common images. Whether in ancient times or at present, wearing figures of Buddha can bring safety and peace to people. Generally speaking, females should wear the jewelry with Tathagata image and Mother Buddha for males. This general practice aims to tell us women should be more generous and tolerant while men should get rid of brutality and violence and become as mercy as women. The jade jewelry with figures of Buddha is worshiped by many people, especially in Asian countries.

 

The treasure vase

It is self-evident that it symbolizes endless rain of wealth and properties. Business men like to wear accessories with treasure vase, which means attract wealth.

 

The above mentioned five types are just the main choices. There are also many other designs like golden fish. Generally speaking, figures of Buddha are appropriate for pendants in jade jewelry; lotuses, wheels and vase designs are quite versatile on pendants, necklaces, and bangles and so on.
